Edward T. Hall, an anthropologist, proposed the concepts “high context” and “low context” in his book Beyond Culture, thereby citing Japan as a typical example of a “high context” society and the USA as a typical example of a “low context” society. In the Japanese society, the cultural context (message behind explicit/verbal message, background) has been shared in advance to a higher degree, contributing to reducing the volume of information needed for communication. In multi-cultural or multi-ethnic societies like the USA, on the other hand, the context shared is not simple, thus requiring a larger volume of information for communication.
Having said so, Hall points out that a “high context” society should be set as a goal if we desire to achieve social stability and smooth human relationships. A “high context” society can save the time and labor needed for communication thanks to prior “agreements” among its members. It, however, involves the risk of weakening the relationship between communities not sharing such “agreements.” A closed community is more likely to arise from a “high context” society.
Placing two different forms of communication into contrast (sign language vs verbal speech), this product argues about the possibility and impossibility of communication not based on diverse prior “agreements” and poses questions about the way of such communication.

文化人類学者のエドワード・T・ホールは『文化を超えて』において、「ハイコンテクスト」と「ローコンテクスト」という区分を提示しており、「ハイコンテクスト」社会の典型を日本、「ローコンテクスト」社会の典型を米国としています。日本社会においては、文化的コンテクスト（文脈、背景）が事前に共有されている割合が高く、その分コミュニケーションにおいての情報量が少なくてすむ一方、米国のような多文化、多民族社会においては共通するコンテクストが複雑であるため、コミュニケーションをとるにあたって、その伝達する情報は量を伴わざるを得ないとしています。
ホールは、社会を安定させ、人間関係を円滑にするためには「ハイコンテクスト」社会を目指さなければならないとしていますが、「ハイコンテクスト」社会は、事前の「申し合わせ」によってコミュニケーションに費やす時間や労力が省かれる一方、その「申し合わせ」を共有しないコミュニティ同士の関係を脆弱にしていく危険性を孕んでいます。閉じたコミュニティはむしろ「ハイコンテクスト」社会において頻発するのかもしれません。
本作は、手話と口頭といった異なるコミュニケーション形態を対峙させることで、様々な「申し合わせ」を前提としないコミュニケーションの可能性と不可能性、またその在り方についての問いを投げかけるものです。
